    aye,
There are several reasons the town of Ardeer has a high rate of type two diabetes and these are based around the fact that the people/groups that are in this area are socially/ economically and environmentally disadvantaged. Geographically Ardeer is not in the heart of melbourne which means less infrastructure is combined with less ability to access health care services and information. This is a main contributor to the one in three people aged 55 and over in Ardeer having type 2 diabetes. Location also impacts the amount of jobs in the area and the level of income to families in Ardeer. Income has a large impact on an individuals health whether it be paying for health services and also impacts negatively on the mental and emotional parts of health. The fact that one in seven people in western Melbourne aged 55 and over has diabetes can be party explained by the fact that there is not enough awareness created in the western melbourne area about health problems like diabetes and it seems like the area is also being neglected financially by the government as well.

I would agree with a lot of what Alec said, but the town of Ardeer isn’t that far out from the middle of Melbourne. People living here would most likely have access to health services, including physical services, mental/emotional support, and they would also be socially active because they live close to public transport. So environmental factors may not be the main issue in why there are so many cases of type 2 diabetes in this suburb.

I think the main issues would be with economic and cultural factors. These factors include: employment, income, education, family, peers, media and religion. Because Ardeer is in the western region of Melbourne, poeple living there may have a low socio-economic status. They might not have not had a proper education, may have a low income and may be unemployed (mainly from the large group of refugees living there). As Melika said in the personal account (second link Ms Van Gogh gave us) many refugees leave countries like Burma and Africa, and settle in Western Melbourne. Many of these refugees are uneducated and therefore may not be aware of type 2 diabetes. As Alec said, another reason why type 2 diabetes is so common in Ardeer with 1 in 3 people over 55 having it, is that they may not be aware of it and its symptoms.
Also in the personal accounts, there were a lot of cases involving genetic factors, that is why I believe that heredity is a huge factor in why so many people have type 2 diabetes. But this is mainly in the whole of western Melbourne, not just in Ardeer.

    eyyy,

how sick was swimmin carnival, especially freestyle…

There are many reasons why the town of Ardeer has the highest prevalence of type 2 diabetes in western Melbourne. The people of Ardeer are socially, economically and environmentally disadvantaged. They are socially disadvantaged because the town of Ardeer is not close to the centre of melbourne, it is on the outskirts, meaning there is less infrastructure, resulting in lessened ability to access health care services and information. This explains why one in three people aged 55 and over in Ardeer develop type 2 diabetes. Socially, the people of Ardeer probably only socialise with people from their hometown, simply because it costs a lot to travel to and from Ardeer. Ardeer is also a socio-economic disadvantaged town; this is because there is not many large companies or business to provide jobs and income. One in seven people in Western Melbourne aged 55 and over have diabetes; it seems that the region has not got enough businesses or companies to provide incomes for the town of Ardeer, forcing individuals to buy cheaper foods which may not be the healthiest diet (processed foods with added salt etc).

With the new information of diabetes in western melbourne people may be at first suprised. but they need to consider social, economical and environmental factors. towns such as Adeer have a high prevelance of type 2 diabetes and more than 1 in 3 people aged over 55. These people may not have the money that people in central melbourne have meaning they wouldnt be able to by as healthy foods and there would be more fatty salty foods. it also means they would have less money to go to any mdeical centres or gyms. there would aso be less places like this giving the people less options so if someone did get really sick they may have to travel a long distance to get the sufficient medical help.

    kkkkkkkkk.

I agree with these three professional comments by three intelligent young people however i would like to add a couple of comments. As stated in the editorial, Suburbs in Western Melbourne have some of the highest prevalence of diabetes in the whole state of Melbourne. It is also increasing substantially andis up one in seven, in comparison to the victorian average of one in thrity. This is a major issue. Cultural Diversity, lower socio economic status, poor health literacy, and insufficient infrastructure all contribute to an unhealthy lifestyle. Different cultures is an essential part we must analyse because many cultures arriving to Australia are struggling to adapt to the fatty and unnutritious foods found in Australia. Lower socio economic status is another reason for the evergrowing trend of Diabetics in these suburbs. Food is expensive these days as inflatiion is getting worse and this is making it more and more difficult for famililies to live. Therefore they rely on fast foods which have worse consequences on their health longterm. Thanks go Panthers, lets go USA for ICehockey too

    Hey,

i agree with these people as well, the reason the people of Ardeer have a large amount of people with type 2 diabetes is because the people who live in ardeer are socially, economically and environmentally disadvantaged, this is because ardeer is not in the centre of melbourne it is on the outskkirts of melbourne which means less health care places and infrastructure for the people in ardeer, so this is why the people of ardeer have 1 and 3 for people over 50 have type 2 diabetes. Income is another reason there are less jobs in ardeer for people to work to get money to buy healthy food, so they go to fast food places like mcdonalds, kfc etc

    Explain the reasons the town of Ardeer has the highest prevalence of type 2 diabetes in western Melbourne;

The town of Ardeer in Melbourne has the highest prevalence of type 2 disbetes for many reasons that support this statement. Ardeer is in fact Socially/ economically and environmentally underprivileged on so many levels. This small town under goes low socio economic status, poor health literacy, and insufficient infrastructure on an every day basis.
The article states the prevalence of diabetes in the west is up to one in seven compared to the Victorian average of one in thirty. This may be as the town is rather a rural/remote area which in some cases interferes with the families living in Ardeer. Not being able to access health care, educational purposes, particular food resources, transport services and etc. This can cause great harm to their health. Being socially distracted and deprived can also have a negative impact on their health. Socializing within there hometown and cultural backgrounds as there is low income to travel, shop etc. As Ardeer suffers from low revenue impacts on the whole town. Business’ is in strife and so are job offers. But most of health resources and health services are limited due to not having enough funds. This affects the town emotionally, mentally, physically, socially, spiritually.
People in the town of Ardeer, at the age of 55 and over are prone to diabetes. Clearly there is no education with in this department and over all needs great awareness in preventing such harm.

The town of Ardeer has the highest prevalence of type 2 diabetes due to the face that it is socially and economically disadvantaged town in the middle of melbourne.
This small town has a low econmic status and is shown to have poor health due to the lack of education.
Also due to the fact that Ardeer is located on the outskirts of Melbourne this means that there would be great difficulties in accessing health care services.
This is what creates high rates in type 2 diabetes in the town of Ardeer. Also these 3 factors contribute in the high rate of type 2 diabetes.
lack of education = lack of education means not enough understanding of the disease.
low econmic status = low economic status means not enough money to get the information of services provided to treat the disease
location of the town = the location of the town isn’t close to enough health care services.

The town of Ardeer has the highest prevalence of type 2 diabeties in Western Melbourne because it is disadvantaged. Ardeer is not located near the city or central Melbourne, so it can not access health services such as GP’s or doctors. Because Ardeer is not located near the centre of Melbourne, the people are not near the city or main businesses. This effects their income because they can not work in highly payed jobs. Low economic status due to low income can influence negative food choice.
This town has the highest prevalence of type 2 diabetes in western Melbourne, this is, one in seven of the population.
One in seven people in Western Melbourne aged 55 and over have diabetes. These statistics show that there is a major problem and high prevalence of type 2 diabetes in the town of Ardeer.

The reasons why the town of Ardeer has the highest prevalence of type 2 diabetes in Western Melbourne is because of the economical and environmental and social factors which they are disadvantaged in.
The main thing is that Ardeer is in a rural area which means there are not much white collar jobs and instead working in a low wage environment. They cannot purchase good nutritiouse food because they are low socio-economic status. They also cannot go to medical checkups or to doctors because of the location, money or awareness.
This all can contribute to why one in three people in Ardeer aged 55 and over has diabetes.

Pople live in Ardeer has the highest population with diabeties in Western Melboune, this is because they are disadvantaged in socially, economically and environmentally factors.
Ardeer is not located in middle of Melborne and this effects people live in Ardeer socially, like hardrer for people to access to the health service places and other infrastructure. Also even if they find one they won’t get good quality service compares to the other big cities health services. Also it is hard to get a good job if you are living in the town like Ardeer and that means your income is low and can’t pay for the better quality health services.
So the town Ardeer has the highest population with diabeties in Western Melbourne because of these disadvantage factors that they have.

Ardeer has the highest prevalence of type two diabetes. The reasons why is becasue it is socially, economically and enviromentally disadvantaged. Ardeer is not near the city its on the outskirts, so it can not get to good health services unless they travel a long distance. It is hard to get a job becasue you are not near the city centre which means you will get a low income. Since they have low pay and are not near the city they cannot have medical check ups.
This is why Ardeer has the highest prevalenceof type two diabetes.
