Discuss the barriers that prevent people participating in physical activity or exercise. Provide solutions or suggestions to overcome these barriers. ( A reminder to paragraph, punctuate and use course terminology in your writing)

There are many various barriers that prevent people participating in physical activity or exercise. For example, feelings about fitness or exercise, access to facilities, convenience of use, exercise as a priority and influence of other responsibilities (e.g. family and work).

Feelings about fitness or exercise comes down to laziness, emotional problems (depression etc), over confidence, embarrassment and selfconciousness. These barriers stop individuals from participating in physical exercise, which can lead to long term effects such as obesity, and phycological factors. Some people are too embarrassed to leave their homes and exercise, especially if they are overweight and tend to just stay at home. Other factors like over confidence can mean people think they are ‘too good’ or ‘don’t need to’ go to exercise.
Convenience of use has factors surrounding it such as limited access to a positive attitude, limited space, cost, time, home gym equipment, and going to the gym itself.
Access to facilities also has many factors such as transport, location, money, wheelchair accessible, confidence and time management. These factors all relate to the access to facilities.
People also don’t look at exercise as something you have to do. This comes down to exercise as a priority. Factors surrounding this topic are, lack of time or just plain not interested, no encouragement, embarrassment, cultural influences and peers and family influence their children.

Some of the major barriers to physical activity participation are
    – time (other priorities like homework, friends, sport),
    – emotional barriers ( safety, no one to do it with, embarrassment)
    – Some people dont know how much physical activity is required and do not have knowledge about local fitness programs for different ages and abilities as well as sporting clubs/groups in the area
    – cost
    – location (might live in an apartment in the city where there is no local parks or places to run/walk/tai chi

Despite all these reasons many people say they have no time, money or space to exercise yet they watch two to three hours of tv a day. Most people who are inactive may not even think about doing physical activity or if they do they lack the motivation to start. Motivation, I think is one of the largest barriers concerning physical activity for people all ages.

Some of the Major barriers in participation of physical activity:

Time-this is a major barrier to some people say if they have a full time job 9-6 then coming home to help the family they really dont have enough time to participate in physicval activity, or they may just want to socialise all the time with friends, also they may have alot of study to do.

    Cost

Location- You might be living in a small apartment in the middle of the city with no real parks or gyms anywhere near you or a small counrtry town where the nearest facilities are the next city along.

Also the knowlege of knowing about fitness programs for different genders and ages and even cultures, gyms and sporting clubs.

Social Barriers- You might be suffering from depression or not know how to socialise so this makes the person very shy and not wanting to come out of the house to do any physical activity, which means they will just sit around doing nothing all day.

Transport- Some people may not have a car or not have enough money(fits in with cost as well) to pay for public transport to go to a gym or sport facilities.

Also another barrier is just general lazziness where people just cant be bothered to go do any physical activity, some people say they dont have time, money or the transport to do physicalk activity but spend 3 hours a day on the tv or computer after school.

Nick you need to rewrite this answer as outlined. *Discuss* means talk about- this does not mean dot points-please give some explanation about each barrier and then some suggested strategies to overcome the barriers

Money might not have a good enough job that pays well. Time if you have a high paying job your generally working more hours which leaves you not that much time or no time to exercise with sunlight better in sunlight. If you dont have the right knowledge you might hurt yourself or damaged your growth plates espcially a young kid trying to impress the ladies (ared) with his massive biceps. Motivation is one of the most important ones as you need this to start physical activity it will help if you have a friend or a family member with you when you exercise to help support you.

The barriers that prevent people participating in physical activity or exercise include: Income, time, self esteem and friends.
Income- such as how well your job pays, if you dont earn enough money you might not be able to pay for gym memberships or sporting clubs.
Time- You may not have enough time on your hands, as you might be working for long hours and go on long business trips which leaves you with no time for physical activity.
Self esteem- You may not be willing to get involved in physical activity becasue you are to embarrsed about your image which leads to being not confident that you can work out around other people.
Friends – If your not really a social person and you dont have any friends your in trouble becasue you wont be able to exercise with anyone which only allows you to work out by yourself, which leaves you with a less chance of any exercise or physical activity.

There are many barriers that prevent people from participating in physical activity.

    Motivation
    Money
    Time
    Low self esteem

Although these are barriers that people say stops them from being physically active, they are all easy to over come.

To help over come motivation as a barrier you may consider joining a gym; the money you are paying may motivate you more. Another option is to start working out with a group or friends, to help keep you interested in doing the exercise.

To help over come money as a barrier you may consider going for morning walks/runs as this does not cost you any money, you may also consider doing things like walking up the stairs at work instead of using a lift as this is a cheap way to get some extra physical activity through out the day.

If you do not have the “time” to exercise you may consider writing yourself a schedule to help manager your time better to fit in you exercise for the day.

If you are struggling with low self esteem to make yourself feel better go out and by some new gym clothes that you want to work out in, this may make you feel better and give you more self esteem to get back into your exercise routine or start a new one.

Torie , you have provided an excellent outline of ways to overcome barriers. However in the first instance you were asked to “discuss” the barriers and you have only provided a list. As part of a normal exam question you would have only received half of the available marks.

There are many reasons why people do not participate in physical activity and prevent it, we could also have a solution to overcome these barriers.

The barriers that prevent people from participating in physical activity are:
    Time
    Low self-esteem
    Motivation
    Money

Many people may not have time because of the busy lifestyle they have, but they could try and fit in 1 hour of physical activity in a day. Instead of going to places – such as school and work – by car you could walk to the place.
People may also be unconfident in exercise because of the way they look or because think bad about their own body.
Many people say that having no money is a problem, but if that was the case there is always parks and fields that you can exercise and do physical activity on.
Sometimes you think there is no need to exercise because you are overconfident of your health.

    • August 14, 2010 10:17 pm

Kelvin ,this is a satisfactory answer with the barriers outlined and some attempt to provide strategies. You need to provide stronger examples and write a little more about these in order to access more marks in exam questions
      Example
Time is often a key barrier to participation in physical activity. Students often cite schoolwork, mothers childcare comittments and business people work comittments. While this may be the case the value placed on health and wellbeing should ensure all people have time to include it in their schedule. An example may be for students to schedule regular study breaks or use time to and from school for physical activity

Everyone needs to be healthy and stay active by doing physical activity or regular exercise. Although in many cases people often have barriers which stop them or limit them from doing the required physical activity or exercise. For example barriers which prevent you from doing physical activity and exercise are; motivation, time, money, family and peers.
People require motivation in order for them to participate in physical activity, for example they may not be very active, so it is difficult for them to keep finding the motivation to exercise. In order to find motivation they can try getting a personal trainer, exercise with friends or gradually work from doing very little exercise to doing a little bit more eash time.
Many people do not have time to exercise due to long hours at work and school work from school. To overcome this they can try managing their time better and improving their organisation skill to allow more time for physical activity.
To be able to participate in a gym, or a club a fee of money is required, and some people may not be able to afford depending on their income. To overcome this they can participate in non-paying physical activity such as, going for a run or just kicking a ball around with mates.
You may have family commitments such as looking after the kids. In this case you can just hire someone to babysit or look after them while you can allow time to participate in physical activity.
If you hang out with peers who are not physically active you are more likely to be encouraged to not be physically active. Although if you want to overcome this and become active you can find another peer group which are physically active. This will encourage you to participate in physical activity or exercise.

Discuss the barriers that prevent people participating in physical activity or exercise. Provide solutions or suggestions to overcome these barriers.

Physical activity and exercise is part of everyones every day life. At times we may also experience barriers that prevents us from exercising. These barriers may consist of Money/Cost, Location, lack of education, emotional barriers, time, and motivation.

Cost: This depends on your income from your job. With an insuffient amount of money, it makes it hard for people to involve themselves in exercise. Exercise such as gym memberships, sporting clubs and just social sporting events in general.
Suggestions: Participate in social sports such as mothers friendly netball game, or simply just using our lovely outside acitivties such as beach, parks etc. Going for a run or jog at night is a cheap yet great form of exercise.
Location: Living in rural areas and places that are far from social groups maybe also act as a barrier to some people as they tend to not make an effort to travel to engage in physical activity. Living in an busy environment such as the city may also impact upon people, as they may not be near any natural facilities such as parks, beachs, pools etc.
Suggestions: Sign up for your local gym, and reward yourself with a gym membership which you can exercise on the latest equipment. If living in a small space maybe consider buying a tredmill etc or even just add an extra walk/run to your daily routein.
Lack of Education/knowlegde: Most people would not know the daily requirements for the amount of physical activity they must do. They might not be aware of the fitness groups and activites around them.
Suggestions: Shop around, browse and see what your options are. Gather some pamthlets, use internet and books to find out information.
Emotional barriers: People may experience emotional diffcultties when it comes to exercising. Having a low self esteem may affect them from exercising in social groups or simply by themselves. Not being confident is a major barrier towards interacting in physical activity.
Suggestions: Interact with your follow friends or maybe someone you may feel comfortable with. Working out with a personal trainer may be a great way to improve fitness levels. If self esteem is really low I suggest maybe going for a run with yourself at night or whatever feels comfortable the most!
Motivation: Not having the motivation to exerise can also have a vast impact on this issue. “Can’t be bothered” or “I’ll do it later” are only two of many excuses people use on a daily basis to get out of doing exercise.
Suggestions: Work yourself up and get into a routein which you know you will follow. Talking to a friend may help you to motivate yourself.
Time: As we all lead a busy lifestyle we all sometimes find it hard to scheldule exercise in our daily routein.
Suggestions: Draw up an “exercise timetable” where you may think you can fit exercise into. If you Work a lot you may consider going to the gym in your lunch break at work. Or simple things such as catching public transport to work or even walk or cycle to work. Little things like this can add up to the required amount of exercise you should do daily.

The barriers that prevent people from participating in physical activity or exercise are cost, access to facilities, feelings about exercise and exercise as a piority.

Participatiion in physical activity can vary in cost. For example golf is very expensive because you need to purchase clubs, balls, cloting and etc. So exercise such as walking and running could be the choies for the people who dno’t have money to spend on exercise.
Access to facilities includes things like time managemnet, transport and location. Some people don’t have time to exercise because of their busy lifestyle. Also because of where they live they might have difficulty in transport. You can overcome these barriers by hiring the personal trainer or buying the gym equipment at home.
Feelings about fitness can be the barrier of those people who are lazy, low self esteem and embarassment. Ways to overcome this barrier is that start of from doing training at home.
Exercise as piority, people has different piority to the exercise. For example there are difference in piority of exercise between top athlete and mother who has kids. To athlete the fitness comes down to first piority and to mother her kids comes down as a first piority.

Some barriers that prevent people in participating in physical activity and excercise are embrassment, time, laziness and money. i think that these 4 thing would be the most contributing barriers. Embarrassment because people might not want to go for runs and excersise in front of people because they feel self concious about there weight. a solution for this is to do a home gym system and te get up to were you feel comfortable with your weight and fitness at home before you go out. time, this is a barrier for almost every working man and woman. people are to stressed out about there work and how much they have that the time they do have off they can often enjoy watching tv or other relaxing things. a solution to this would be to use a gym or workout program at your work. most workplaces have some faciltys and if not you could work to and from work then at least your still doing something. laziness is the biggest barrier for me. a way to get motivated is by setting yourself goals. tell yourself how much you will do in a certain time and achieving it. lasatly money can be a barrier but this has an easy solution. do activites such as running or jogging or even swimming. this way you can still particpate in excersice without having to pay.
