Preliminary Option – Fitness Choices

July 22, 2010

We are finally into the home stretch – options in the preliminary course!!

Fitness Choices is a lightweight option and as such allows a suitable amount of practical to be done. I have already indicated we will arrange an excursion to a gym to participate in a number of classes. Having a look at the syllabus outline are there any practical activities you would like to try???? (of course dependant on cost, availability etc). As well as considering this please write a response to the following statement by Sunday 25th July

Describe the value you place on exercise and fitness.

Week 8 More Health Promotion

March 14, 2010

We have covered in class last week the definition of health promotion, the groups responsible for health promotion  -(individuals,communities,government and non-government organisations and international organisations eg WHO)

In groups last friday you looked at health promotion approaches/strategies. We will discuss these in class on Tuesday. On Monday 15/3 you have been booked into E14 computer room to complete the ‘Critical Thinking Activity” on page 57 of your student workbooks in the table indicated. This activity requires you to look at 3 different organisations and summarise some of the strategies they use to promote their message  – you are to look at their website and list/outline programs for the different population groups eg jump rope for heart is a program aimed at school chidren to promote physical activity and therefore heart health.

Your post to the blog this week is to:

Discuss the effectiveness of 1 health promotion campaign in changing attitudes/behaviours of young people. Give reasons supported by evidence that supports your discussion.

WEEK 4

February 14, 2010

Health Behaviours of Young People

Last lesson you were asked to complete an activity on p20 regarding your perceptions of the health of young people. We have already looked at an article in class titled “Young people’s health and well-being”. Pairs were asked to summarise a section of this and hand to me. We will briefly look at the summary on Monday and also look at the 2007AIHW report. If you get a chance to look before Monday it is the Executive Summary pages 10-12 from the link above.

What are your own perceptions of youth health??

Would your parents answer the same way? Why or why not?

Don’t forget to survey 5 people over 30yrs age about some of their perceptions of youth health. We will compare these with the facts next lesson. Feel free to comment on the questions above- not compulsory but would be interesting!!!

AND SO IT BEGINS

February 5, 2010

Hi Everyone

Most of you are have started the year well . We have nearly finished dot point 2 ‘perceptions of health’.  The aim of this is to understand  how we perceive our own or others health. This requires a recognition that these perceptions are influenced by a number of factors. These include the environment, family, peers, self esteem, media and  culture. It is also important to recognise what these perceptions may mean.

One  example that  students completed today referred to a girl who was not worried about her  health because her grandmother lived into her 90’s. This girl had confidence in her abilityto stay healthy that may have been misplaced. It  may mean that her over confidence would cause her not to exercise adequately, or consume appropriate food ……..etc

Our next consideration is to understand that heath is ‘socially constructed’. This will be the topic of our next lesson and an important concept to understand. Click on the link below to do some preliminary reading

yr 11 core 1 health as a social construct

Using this reading and information from your next lesson, comment on your understanding of this concept. This will be in the form of another blog post (you may also refer to another students post when answering ie. discussion)

DAY 1 Introductions

January 28, 2010

Well it was nice to finally meet my new class – love teaching this course and no matter how many classes I have, they are always different from any other. It was nice to meet all the new students to KHHS as well as touch base with some well known faces.

Remember the information about how you are to keep your work organised – this is probably one of the “KEYS” to achieving your best results.

You received a number of handouts today including syllabus documents(there is a link to this in the last post I made.) In addition some pages titled “What Do People Mean by Health? In today’ s lesson we looked at definitions of health and the 5 dimensions of health. Over the next 3 days I would like you to add 1  comment about ” How how an individual’s circumstances affect their health”

Consider this as your first HOMEWORK

Getting started

January 25, 2010

It will be a good idea to have a looseleaf storage system for your notes and all handouts. I would prefer this method is used to ensure all notes/sheets etc on the same topic are together. It is expected that all work on a topic will be brought to all classes as they may be needed over the duration of the unit.

If you are away for any reason the expectation is that you will either see me on return to class or have a ‘buddy’ who will collect sheets , give you missed notes etc.

All notes should have a syllabus heading Ex Core 1 – Better Health for Individuals-What Does Health Mean To Individuals. Colour coding also makes it easier to remember information and organise notes. You will be given a glossary of key terms for PDHPE.

YR 11PDHPE

January 25, 2010

Hello yr 11 PDHPE class. This is a site that will allow you to access hand outs, receive messages and hopefully provide a forum to discuss ‘stuff” about this course.

It will provide a place to go if you (or I) are away from class!!! Check for any work to be completed and provide links to relevant websites that match class work.
